![]() ![]() I was genuinely interested in their lives and what happened to them. The characters were well drawn and I felt a connection with them all. I particularly loved the relationships between the characters and the stories about the different people involved in the network of families, friends and acquaintances eg the cruise, the affair, the pregnancy, etc. I must admit to being slightly unsure, initially, with all the intense information and detail about the war and politics but as the story developed I began to really enjoy it. Fascinating.Ī beautiful cover, a brilliant story and a most enjoyable read. ![]() One of the books I have most enjoyed reading in this group. Read other books by the author - this was not typical not my favourite. Unsentimental - author distanced from the events so rather dry and detached? Is this typical of her writing? Too much information - 50 years to encompass in one book so perhaps inevitable. Style of writing? Found it wooden, cold, forensic, historical non-fiction, recount, very little dialogue, read like a wikipedia entry, didn’t read well. Interested in Neruda’s emphasis on bringing the artists and musicians on The Winnipeg. Film with Jack Lemmon - “Missing” - depicts the horror and brutality of the military coup and disappeared people. Theme of the refugee and displaced peoples relevant to today. ![]() Fascinated by the politics of Chile at that time - Allende and Pinochet. Learnt a lot I hadn't known about the Spanish Civil War even though I had read Orwell, Hemingway, Lee and other accounts. ![]()
